Geese / The Bodega / Nottingham

Geese / The Bodega / Nottingham

Another trip to the brilliant Bodega in Nottingham to see Brooklyn NY rockers Geese touring with their latest album “3D Country”, with some exciting local talent in support.

A triple bill (go to love 2 supports) and first up on stage are Nottingham 8-piece band Dura Mater. A group of friends that met at university here in Nottingham, it’s hard to define exactly what they are. Very much a post-punk sound, but with a trumpet and violin, it blends in elements of SKA and reggae sounds too. With strong vocals and sharp riffs and jagged melodies they create an exciting energy on stage As the set ended, the violinist came to the front and old school punk style, bow strings dangling loose, hands his violin to someone in the audience and between them bash out a fast and furious solo. Great stuff !

Next up, we had Folly Group who hail from London and have an experimental edge to them. With a very varied discography, they create a glorious and vibrant sound. I really enjoyed their set, which was pumped full of energy right from the off. With guitar, bass, drums and percussionist, their sound is loud and full of sonic depth, but managed well so as not to swamp the vocals. Brilliant stuff and thoroughly enjoyable, I’d love to see them again soon.

And it’s almost time for Geese to hit the stage. What I love about venues and bands like this, is they’re out setting up themselves, at one with their audience. After sorting some issues with the keyboard and laptop connections, the house engineers leave the stage and Geese launch into their set.

Turning round, I realise just how packed the place has got. You can hardly move and the temperature is rising fast ! They open the set with Domoto a slower number packed with fragility and emotion, a sharp contrast from what we’d just seen, before they jumped headlong into an energetic rendition of the brilliant 2122. Their sound is rock, but with am edge and with a drop of country styling to it to. I loved the funky bass sound from Dominic DiGesu’s Fender.

The crowd are loving every second of the set and I really enjoyed tracks such as I See Myself, Raindance, Cowboy Nudes and new track Jesse, which went down a storm. Throughout the set, Cameron Winter’s vocals were exceptional.

A brilliant night. All three acts were on form. I hadn’t heard much of Geese before tonight, but I really enjoyed it, and their unique Brooklyn sound is one I’d love to catch again…. Real soon.
